My Favorite Fruit Smoothie

Some of the strawberries we picked on Mother’s Day found their way on top of chocolate cupcakes in a delightful strawberry cream cheese frosting. Others ended up in a blender for my favorite fruit smoothie.

This is my go-to smoothie. The recipe is incredibly versatile and can be made in a flash. The results are refreshing, healthy and delicious. Next time you need a tasty midday pick-me-up, consider making my favorite fruit smoothie at home. Here’s how:

As the name suggests, fruit is the main ingredient. Strawberries are a must, and I usually add a banana and some blueberries to the mix.

If I have fresh spinach, (which I didn’t when I took these pictures) I’ll throw a handful in, too. I promise you won’t even taste it. And between the spinach and assorted fruit, you have excellent sources of folate, potassium, vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants.

I prefer using frozen fruit in my smoothies because it acts like ice, adding texture and making the drink cold. Unlike ice, however, frozen fruit packs a flavorful punch without watering down the drink. So before fresh fruit starts to turn, I freeze it.

For fresh strawberries, wash and hull them, place them on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper, and put them in the freezer for a few hours. Once they’ve hardened, transfer them into a freezer bag. Same thing goes for bananas and blueberries.

Ok, so back to the making of a smoothie…

Next, I add a few heaping spoonfuls of greek yogurt. (Hello, protein!) Then I drizzle on a touch of honey (because Fage + honey = OMG).

And because sometimes I like to chew my smoothie, I throw in a handful of raw almonds. All kinds of goodness are packed in those little guys.

Lastly, pour in some orange juice and away you go!

This fruit smoothie is my go-to drink after finishing a run. Sometimes I’ll even substitute it for lunch. And it’s definitely the perfect cool drink for hot, summer days. Enjoy!  — v.
