Photos From a Snowy Day

Snow days are great days to do nothing. We get snow just a few times a winter in our little part of the globe, and they are cause for celebration in my household.

A snow day literally and figuratively
falls from the sky, unbidden, and
seems like a thing of wonder.
~ Susan Orlean for The New Yorker

School and activities are cancelled. Errands are postponed. The steady buzz of routine is interrupted and put on pause for a peaceful day of cozying up indoors. Sometimes we stay in our pajamas all day — thankful that we don’t have to travel or shovel — playing, baking, napping and… photographing.

Similar to Photos From a Rainy Day, the weather served as the impetus to whip out my camera and try to capture the wonder of a fresh snowfall from a child’s perspective. From our most recent dusting, I was able to catch these super sweet shots of my little angel.

I could have easily missed this chance. We were on our way into the house from the car; it would have been so much simpler to just go inside. My son was already there, wanting nothing to do with the cold, but my daughter was enthralled with the fluffy white flakes falling slowly before her eyes. Thanks to some gentle prodding from the Chief, I went in, grabbed my camera and came back out. Aren’t you glad?

They say snowflakes are kisses from heaven… I just love how her hair is filled with them. Filled with kisses from above.

My 50mm f/1.8 lens is pretty spectacular. {These optimized images for the web really don’t do these photos justice.} They didn’t require a whole lot of editing in Photoshop, either. I prefer a more natural-looking photograph so I just used the self-healing tool to quickly clean up around her mouth {Five Guys fries + ketchup} and brightened her eyes a tad with this dodge and burn technique.

I just can’t get enough of this little girl. Swoon.

Unfortunately, the shoot concluded before it really started when she accidentally slipped on a small patch of ice. She was fine, but her awe of falling snow was gone. We spent the rest of the snow day indoors snuggled up in blankets, sipping on mugs of hot chocolate and happily doing nothing.
